MisS nEpal : iSSueS wItH rEpReSeNtAtIoN..

The word 'Peasant' and 'Pageant' are kind of homographs(very close to heteronym ,however couldn't hit the exact one). Yes, like a typical heteronym they hold this gigantic difference in their meanings .

A PEASANT GIRL
A 'Peasant girl' runs all the way to the school, bare footed most of the times and attend the leftover classes. For her pace couldn't meet the teachers pace of taking classes. She gets tired of running all her life and her parents tired of the hunting for a sturdy worker at the field finally hires their daughter. To no one's exclaim she is a dropout. She cant be a doctor or an engineer or a nurse or whatever ,had there been any dreams as such. She is destined to work all day long at the field, absorb the scorching sun , get married to a guy (her status or even lower ) she never heard of before and bear some children for him at a very young age. She is no pretty anymore. Had she not quit school and ran miles barefooted and continued her education she would only have lost the beauty of her limbs. That she would be just a pedicure away. But her infantile legs hurt so much at sleep that she decided to quit running . And now she is a full time worker at the field , her daughter quit running too. Which means the whole family can grow more vegetables and supply to the educated town. And after all these years, she is dumbfounded to discover how a town girl of her age makes a front page news. “Malina Joshi crowned Miss Nepal 2011”

Malina Joshi Miss Nepal 2011

And to add to this irony of our nation, a 'Beauty Pageant Girl' holds a whale of a discrepancy in her story. They are not tough athlete. They were either shouldered , toted or they had a luxury motor ride to the school. They were fetched back by the same means. Some of them had been cared so much that to put on an UV protection as soon as they advance out ot the auto's entrance was must. They had been kissed on their foreheads or cheeks , they have been fed fitting meals. Its absolutely not an awful thing to do. Its good to love and get loved. Its good for a country with high number of female dropouts too, next year they get to show lower dropouts statistics and feel proud.

This is about opportunities, that no one is to blame. But one thing is for sure, this whole drama of sophisticated schooling represents fewer elite.

Sarina maskey(2nd runner up to this beauty contest 'miss nepal 2011' frm my locality who is a friend to my sister as well) said in one of her interviews (sounds she has got quite a fame now!!): “beauty contest is a platform to show one's talent”. However Collins English dictionary refers to a beauty contest as 'a competition in which the participants usually women are judged on their attractiveness with a prize and often a title awarded to the winner' and its informal meaning to which every regular person stands by dictates 'any contest decided on the basis of superficial attractiveness, popularity, etc ' . Except, my vision working just fine, I don't see any talent word cited.

They say things like skill development , women empowerment and craps but the reality is its a mere beauty contest and trying to delude people that they are crowing the best brain and best face of Nation. However they fail to do both at times. Comn !! Sugarika KC crowned miss Nepal; neither she had this sensational face nor an exceptional brain. This will be too hasty of me talking about this new Miss Nepal . But its just a show off with limited intelligence, a hoon in short.
Sugarika KC

They talk big, Miss Nepal are serving countries in their own way. Which way is that??? I frankly don't expect them to change things going wrong in this country for which they are not to blame. Nor I blame them for any of the erroneous situation. They are appointed good will ambassador to some INGOs or they are giving hand to 'go green' movement or visit some orphanage. Thats their thing ; rallies , workshops, youth campaign , promoting visit Nepal, blah blah.... Call me a depressing soul, I cant credit them for this pity act.

I have seen mighty women journalist, social activist, walking all their way to the remotest places in Nepal and fetching stories of people never heard before risking their life. The stories of people with bleakest hopes. The stories of 12 yrs of civil war and its traces, the stories of how women are affronted in the places where a government could never finger itself.
I don't want to sound a moron here, talking about the clothes they wear or body parts they expose that I never care. That will just be any female Maoist leader's brawling. Their protest is about how the women are exposed that I think is a completely foolish issue they raise.

However the point I bicker is the platform they enjoy. The fancy idea of people calling this a beauty cum talent hunt. Modeling can be a profession, since few town girls are interested getting into it,so be it. Call it “Nepal's Top Model”. It is acceptable. But how few percent of elites participating this event can call themselves Miss Nepal contender and dare to represent the rest of Nepal where more than 80% of the total population is farmer. And more than 90% of the population lives in rural areas. And 90% of female population is farmer. Where the literacy rate is just 25% for females and huge female dropouts in the rural parts. Where each day women confront poverty , violence , racism and sexism to which this participants are not even aware of.

How can the girs nourished to use forks or walk or wear clothes be representing the face of all the Nepalese women who lost their enchanting look to the scorching sun. How can the girls coached to talk be the wisest of all and represent the rest of the intellectual women bestowing their lives for media freedom, democracy or fighting day to day violence. Since you can't drag all the women to the stage and make a fair representation, which is obvious;you won't and I don't want you to. How about you change the name of the contest and stop bullying about your girls representing nation. Or you try to realize your participation sucks. Or you try to make your participation a little country friendly and after you crown them you help them with the modeling stuffs.

Ps: just personal thoughts..i am running no campaign against it...

  1. well written article, ideas are nicely presented, appropriate words... keep it up
I liked the article, and to suggest you, write more shorter articles, these days reading long articles, people hard get interested in .. that is problem of the people, not yours.
Pros and cons in your views write them, not necessarily sticking to any points, write range of thoughts.
Particularly, regarding this beauty contest, rich girls are sponsored by their parents becoz their is lots of skill building training during the miss nepal closed camp, not necessarily all girls whose public opinion of beauty enter the closed camps, but others also.
Poor Girls never make it to the competition.
so,some rich girls make it to the competition and finally very few get good opportunities.
There is always "body and mind" debate during beauty contest, ultimately it not decided whether contest won for her body or her mind.
Debates go on, since it is contemporary issue.

    Keep writing
